Hip Hip Hooray - Today’s Repeal Day!
Today is December 5, 2007. It’s a Wednesday, it’s the second day of Hanukkah and, according to our friends on the Internet “ninja lovers around the world will be celebrating the fourth annual Day of the Ninja this December 5.”
For most, today may seem just like any other day (unless you are a ninja), but it actually marks one of America’s most important historical moments: Repeal Day. On December 5, 1933, the U.S. ratified the 21st Amendment, repealing Prohibition and the dreaded 18th Amendment, which in 1919, made the manufacture, sale, or transportation of intoxicating liquors illegal. Imagine nearly 14 years without a cocktail! Thanks to moonshine, speakeasies and bootleggers, most of the country found a way to satisfy their cravings and many classic cocktails were born.
So, in honor of this glorious day, grab a friend, hit your favorite watering hole and raise a glass to the patriots before us who restored the American right to a celebratory drink. We’ll be celebrating with our favorite flavored vodkas on the rocks!
Reasons to Celebrate Repeal Day (courtesy of Jeffrey Morgenthaler and repealday.org):
It’s the perfect time of year.
Conveniently located halfway between Thanksgiving and Christmas — Repeal Day presents a wonderful occasion to get together with friends and pay tribute to our constitutional rights.
We have the constitutional ability to do so.
Unlike St. Patrick’s Day or Cinco de Mayo, Repeal Day is a day that all Americans have a part in observing, because it’s written in our Constitution.
It’s easy!
There are no outfits to buy, silly hats to wear or rivers to dye green. Simply celebrate the day by stopping by your local bar, tavern, saloon, winery, distillery or brew house and have a drink.
Cheers!
